New Year News

Happy 2006!

This year has started quite differently from 2005; last year I was out of work, looking forward to a long holiday and a rest, and an operation on my knee. In 2006, I am working (albeit on a 3-month contract), looking forward to a long holiday and a rest, and my knees are good but my back is dodgy!

At work, I am halfway through my contract - I really enjoy some of the "work", but not too much of the culture of the place where I'm at. The offices are in the middle of a down-market industrial estate, and I commented to my girlfriend during my first week that I would do well to get through the three months without getting mugged! I still feel that way. Although I listen to music on my 23 minute walk to work each morning, I cannot put the headphones on coming home until I'm well into my walk, for fear that someone will come up behind me and try to forcibly coax me into giving up my Christmas present and whatever else of value I am carrying. Some of the people I work with are really nice, and they have given me very nice compliments on my work. This had led to an offer to stay on there on a permanent basis. This has put me in a quandary, and I'm still unsure what to do. On the positive side, I will have regular decent income, a pension plan, and a good manager, but on the negative side, there are the internal politics that are ugly, a few unhelpful colleagues, and the locale of the office. I think I'll be pushed into making a decision tomorrow.

I'm due to leave on 24th February and we have our Dominica holiday to look forward immediately afterwards. Don't want to get too excited about that yet as it's still six weeks away, but it should be fun.

My back has been playing up a bit; muscle spasms is what I think I got just before Christmas, and I've had two separate twinge days since, both after leaning forwards. So now I get my socks put on for me at every opportunity!

An interesting start to the year - I'll try to blog more regularly now I'm into the groove a little bit at work.
